Ushpizin
I felt very worried throughout this film that the nice religious couple were going to be suddenly horribly murdered by their criminal guests, wondering whether this was just an English reaction and if Israelis watching it would be tougher than me and merely amused rather than terrified, as the film is supposed to be a comedy. It is indeed a comedy, very amusing and in the Shakespearean sense too.
criminal 1 (standing outside prison): I can’t go back, the smell, the smell is killing me! What is Lysol made from anyway?
criminal 2: From Lysol!
It is also full of loveliness and charm. Also it understands something I did not, that criminals and antisocial people are a bit out of control, not actually inherently different from the rest of us, just not reined in. Whereas respectable activities like Orthodox Judaism give people a lot of rules to follow so they are really too busy to be committing crimes. The solution to badness is not just choosing goodness, it is staying focussed on something (else). I think artists probably share the un-reined-in-ness with criminals too.
