the man from planet X
So, went to see this documentary about B movie director Edgar G. Ulmer, which was very interesting and raised a lot of questions about what is genius, what is art, does it require a lot of money to accomplish, is Hollywood unjust, and how to be happy as a film-maker and so on. This was the start of a few weeks of showings of his (art) films (?)/ (low-budget) movies(?), which I intend to see some of, but this one has already been and gone, unfortunately. Here are some earthlings meeting the alien. Anxiety all round, it seems:
And who does this alien portrait remind me of? Can’t think.

Ulmer shot most of the film in fog. He shot a lot of films in fog, to avoid buying sets. Personally, I think there are an awful lot of Hollywood movies that would benefit enormously from the addition of copious amounts of fog. More directors should employ this technique.
